Maybe you're still considering what type of Golden to adopt. Why
not a senior Golden? For Goldens, this is age 8 and older.
How a Golden Retriever finds its way to WAAGR Before a Golden Retriever is taken into WAAGR, a thorough temperament test is administered. From there, the Golden is placed in a foster home where it will live for a minimum of two weeks so we can get a good idea of its personality. The golden will be examined by a veterinarian and will be brought up-to-date on all vaccinations, tested for heartworm, and spayed or neutered. For some Goldens, this will be their first time being allowed in a house. Our Foster Families will work with them on their house manners and basic commands. We will always give an honest evaluation of the Golden, good and bad! The first step in the adoption process is for you to make sure you’re ready for a lifetime commitment! Depending on the age and health of the Golden, this commitment could mean 15 years or more! It would be unfair for your family and the Golden if you can’t make this commitment. If you think this is the right decision for you and your family, please continue reading below! WAAGR Adoption Process The second step is to fill out the and send it to our Brookfield, WI address or apply online. The Adoption Application will be reviewed by our Home Visit Volunteer Coordinator. They will review the application and call you with any questions. The third step will be a visit to your home by one of our Home Visit Volunteers. They will call you for an appointment and set up a time convenient for you. It is preferable for all family members to be present. Usually they will bring a Golden along with them. The Home Visit Volunteer will act as your liaison with the various Foster Homes. It is the triangle of you, the Home Visit Volunteer and the Foster Home that makes for a great match. The fourth step is the most exciting part! You will receive a phone call when a dog that fits your lifestyle becomes available for adoption. The Foster Home will make arrangements for you to spend some time with the Golden to see if it will be a good match. Many times it is love at first sight. This is an ideal situation for both your family and the Golden. Sometimes the fit isn’t right. If that’s the case, we’ll try again. The fifth and final step is routine follow up by our Volunteers. We will offer advice and guidance on questions you may have. If for some reason the adoption doesn’t work out, we will take the Golden back into WAAGR. We realize that sometimes life circumstances change dramatically. In these cases we will always be there to look out for the best interests of the dog.
